When looking for the most spectacular and athletic plays in basketball, one can usually find the best of the best in the NBA. However, Derrick Jones Jr, an undrafted rookie for the Phoenix Suns who is spending time with the team’s D-League affiliate the Northern Arizona Suns, just threw down a dunk that could rival any other, and may be the dunk of the year.

Everything about this dunk is absolutely bonkers; the deep lob pass, the length Jones Jr catches it from the rim, the leap over the defender, and of the course the monster finish.

Jones Jr. played just one season at UNLV, making the leap to the NBA after his ACT scores were cancelled and he sat the final three games of his Freshman season. Jones Jr. went undrafted and missed a chance to play for the Sacramento Kings summer league team due to injury. However, the Phoenix Suns were impressed by his skills and signed him anyway.

Jones Jr. has played in just one game in the NBA, but based on that dunk and some other incredible highlights, he could be making his way to the league soon to join with some of the Suns other young impressive talent.

Hopefully for Jones Jr. and NBA fans alike, he can make the leap to a full-timer in the NBA. With the dunk of the year already under his belt, the thought of Jones joining and challenging Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon in this year’s dunk contest could make for one of the best in recent memory.
