“Let’s [Not] Go Champ”: The end of the road for Shannon Briggs

We are all sick of it, we have all heard it over, and over again; like that long car journey where the radio continues to play the same songs on a never ending playlist; well, Shannon Briggs and his famous tagline are just that:

“Let’s Go Champ, Let’s Go Champ”

You only need to watch two of his Instagram posts to become insanely annoyed by the erratic boxer – who lets not forget, is 45 – and still trying to make a living by fighting the boxers who have years left in them.

If the American isn’t irritating Wladimir Klitschko, you will find him heckling David Haye; another ‘fake’ boxing rivalry you can add to the list.

The 45-year-old’s continual pursuit to fight the Englishman, and put him ‘in his place’ looked already a millions miles off before Haye was brushed aside by Tony Bellew.

If the fight needed any more reason to not go ahead, then the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) have just put the final nail in Briggs’ coffin, as the American has tested positive for testosterone

“Heavyweight Shannon Briggs tested positive on Testosterone following a Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) test as part of the WBA Fair Boxing program”

The fight between two washed up boxers in the heavyweight division now seems an even more unlikely prospect.

Briggs is scheduled to fight Fres Oquendo, but this bout is likely to be cancelled, which has led BJ Flores to put his hand up stating that he will replace the American.

“Two weeks [until the fight] isn’t a problem. I would love to step in and face Fres Oquendo. I am looking for big opportunities”

It’s expected to see the end to The Cannon’s career; one which he has, very respectably, won 60 fights out of 68 bouts. But, he’s dragged his career out with a trending catchline, and has finally made his bed by testing positive for testosterone.

Thanks for the memories, “two-time Champ”.
