Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, is considering a mandate as soon as 2017 that would require cars to be equipped with additional safety features designed to protect drivers.

Until Red Bull unveiled their Aero screen, the preferred concept had been a halo designed by Mercedes.

Even Ferrari couldn’t make the halo look cool.

Drivers definitely need to be protected, but I’m not sure that a giant wishbone is the way to do it.

Despite being designed with the best intentions, the halo concept was never popular among drivers or fans, citing concerns that the device would obscure the driver’s vision.

Those concerns seem to be largely unfounded based on this test of the concept by Sebastian Vettel .

Red Bull’s Aero screen has been greeted with open arms by racing fans.

F1 enthusiast “blazin1414” spoke for the entire community when he said,

“I LIKE THIS WAYYYYY MORE THAN THE HALO SO FAR.”

However, fellow fan “afito” pointed out that there was really nowhere to go but up,

“NOT REALLY MUCH OF AN ACHIEVEMENT TO BE FAIR, THE HALO LOOKED COMPLETELY SHIT”

As time goes on, more information will emerge about Red Bull’s brand new Aero racing screen, but it’s safe to say that it’s a welcome innovation that could make the dreaded halo obsolete.
