The last time Renault were involved in Formula One as a works team, they were winning championships with Fernando Alonso. The team are relying heavily on updates after the RS16 has proven itself to be fairly terrible so far.

Renault have made gains with their power unit as displayed by the surge in speed for Red Bull, who use the TAG Heur branding on their Renault power unit after Christian Horner spat his dummy out last season.

But the Yellow liveried works team is nowhere near the level of Red Bull with their chassis, so in-season upgrades that work are really needed. This is just the start too, a successful upgrade wouldn’t mean podiums, it would mean potential points finishes.

Jolyon Palmer has been testing the new suspension system in the test at Silverstone. He told reporters that,

“We’ve some big suspension updates we’re trying, and a few aero bits. All the time we’ve got some new bits going on, but the suspension is a big focus for us at the moment

“We’re doing a back-to-back [comparison] over the course of the day and hopefully can find something. In the morning we ran something different to the race weekend, and then we reverted back, so we’ll see what happens.”

– Jolyon Palmer

Palmer and Magnussen have had a torrid time so far this season, the only points finish for Renault came in Russia as Magnussen out-drove his RS19. It’s difficult to see the Renault scoring points in Hungary, but major upgrades like this can only help the under-performing team.
