Ericsson Weighs up 2017 Options

Marcus Ericsson has confirmed that his current deal with Sauber is up at the end of this year. The Swedish driver is open to talks with other teams for a 2017 drive.

Despite a new financial deal that will secure Sauber’s future yet again, Ericsson remains firm but fair with his outlook. He was quick to comment after the financial takeover that,

“It’s great news for the team, it’s no secret it’s been a difficult year, financially mainly. We haven’t updated the car in the way we wanted, for the team very, very important and it’s great news.

What it means for the future I don’t know, we have to wait and see but it’s very good news for everyone at Sauber.”

Ericsson joined the team in 2014 after his rookie season with the now non-existent Caterham team. He hasn’t had a real opportunity to show his capability yet though given the torrid time Sauber have had over the past few years.

He is considering other options beyond the Hinwil based team though. He said,

“I’m without a contract for next year. I am looking at Sauber, I really like how it works here at Sauber and hopefully with a new owner we can improve as a team, but l am looking at a few alternatives.”

He’s probably fed up of not even racing in the midfield and would be happy with a move that allows him to challenge for points regularly. He’s definitely an under-rated driver. If Sauber’s financial take-over does equate to performance in 2017, the Swede will be their best bet for regular points finishes.
