Ecclestone appoints himself as F1 Emperor despite Potential Takeover

Who are Liberty Media? They’re a multi-billion dollar Media Giant owned by a guy called John.C.Malone, a cable and media tycoon who is known quite simply as “Darth Vader” in the business world.

So it’s kind of funny that Bernie Ecclestone has already appointed himself emperor. He responded to champion of floral shirts and bold statement generator Eddie Jordan’s calls that he’d be gone by Singapore as simply “Bullshit” before sulking off to groom Darth Malone on the vein of corporate darkness that’s set to remain in the sport.

Bernie has made it clear that he’s not moving and said,

“I’ll keep on doing what I have always done. What role I play is my decision”

One thing that might cause ripples is that John.C.Malone and Rupert Murdoch (The immortal organism that own everything Sky) are corporate rivals. Sky Sports HAM… F1 might be in for a bumpy ride if the major shareholder of the sport is a guy possibly planning to death-grip Murdoch out of the F1 picture.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff chipped in with,

“I don’t know what happens in terms of management. Bernie has done an awesome job for 50 years and made it what it is. He has built an empire and we are all benefiting from that empire.”

Further Star Wars references aside, (It’s really hard to stop.) the likening to an empire is fitting. Empires always crumble from the inside, expanding to levels that ultimately destroy the infrastructure in which they’re built upon. Viewership continues to decline, so a new head is needed at the top. We don’t think the transition to pay-to-view TV has helped the situation at all. If Darth Malone wants to make himself popular, maybe striking back at Murdoch’s SkySports F1 Deathstar will be the way to bring back the viewers.
