Horner – ‘Early RB13 Teething Problems not a Major Concern’

The glossy RB13 reveal video that Red bull used to launch their 2017 challenger yesterday used the theme of luck heavily, with a black cat, rabbit’s foot and a four leaf clover featuring.

The Red Bull team have had some bad luck in the opening test sessions with Daniel Ricciardo suffering two different issues on his RB13 and Christian Horner was quick to explain the problems away.

“We’ve had a few issues this morning. We had a mechanical issue regarding an engine sensor, and having rectified that unfortunately there’s been a battery issue, which necessitated a change and caused quite a bit of downtime.

I’d rather have the problems here than at the first race. The good news is they don’t appear to be major problems, and also encouraging is the fact that both other cars, [with] the same power unit, are running reasonably OK.

One can only assume it’s been unlucky that Daniel has had two issues on his car today.”

Ricciardo managed to have an issue free afternoon session, clocking the fifth quickest time at the end with a 1.22.926, three-hundredths-of-a-second down on Kevin Magnussen in the Haas. The successful running of the RB13 in the afternoon session has put to bed the unlucky problems earlier in the day.

“We’re hoping for a step in performance, and if that’s delivered then hopefully we can really be a challenger this year and give Mercedes and Ferrari a hard time. Mercedes, they’re the triple world champions, the team to beat.

They set the bar pretty high. That’s what we’re aspiring to. The driver line-up we have is fantastic, we’ve had great stability in the team, and we’re excited about the year ahead.”

Despite the shaky start, it’s difficult to imagine any other team other than Red Bull or Ferrari to take the fight to Mercedes. In Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, the team are equipped with not only proven race-winners, but with drivers that have the scope to get even stronger.
