Nicky Hayden Remains in Critical Condition

Former MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden has suffered cerebral damage after being struck by a car while out on a bike ride with his friends.

For someone to be taken out during a road cycling accident is tragic enough, but when that someone is the former World Champion of a sport that consists of one clutching to dear life atop a two wheeled bullet of a bike, it makes the situation seem even worse. Nicky Hayden has been confirmed to still be in critical condition after he was struck by a car on the side of the road on Wednesday.

Hayden was out cycling with several of his friends when the car allegedly slammed Hayden, sending him flying into the windshield and flinging his bike far off into the grass. While no details on the driver have emerged, Nicky has been looked after in the Intensive Care Unit in the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, Italy.

While Nicky’ situation sounds catastrophic indeed, he does have the good fortune to be surrounded by loved ones and friends, including the likes of MotoGP’s living legend, Valentino Rossi.

Rossi visited Nicky on Thursday to comfort his old friend. The Doctor shared that he had spoken with a (medically licensed) doctor about Hayden’s condition, and admitted that it was “very bad”:

“Very, very bad news from yesterday. I spoke straight away with a doctor, my friend, and he said that from the very first moment the situation was very difficult for Nicky.

And now with a bit more time you start to understand. It’s a great shame because Nicky is a great rider for sure, a great talent, a world champion and always at the top, but especially a very good guy.

Coming from a good family of racers, from his father to his two brothers, always a good guy, always smiling, so for sure it’s very bad. I think the situation is very bad but everybody, we hope for the best.” – Valentino Rossi

Our thoughts go out to Nicky Hayden and his family at this difficult time.
