Kvyat and Sainz set to stay at Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso will keep their current drivers Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Saiz Jr for next season.

Toro Rosso’s boss Franz Tost says the team would be “more than happy” to keep Sainz Jr and Kvyat for the 2018 Formula 1 season. Kvyat was demoted to Red Bull’s sister team partway through last season and Max Verstappen replaced him. He has now settled with the team and is finding his stride after a significant knock to his confidence in 2016.

Sainz, meanwhile, is starting his third consecutive year with Toro Rosso, although the Spaniard is looking for a move to Red Bull in the future. Sainz says he can “do no more” to prove he is right for the number one seat at Red Bull Racing. However, both Daniel Ricciardo and Verstappen are contracted to stay at Red Bull in 2018 so Sainz’s options are limited.

Tost admitted the decision to keep Sainz and Kvyat will ultimately be made by Red Bull but insists he would be happy to retain its current line-up despite it meaning Toro Rosso would not run new blood.

“This is a decision for Red Bull. We have to wait. But if they [Sainz and Kvyat] continue with us it would be fantastic,” Tost told Autosport.

“There are not so many teams out there which are so much better than us.

“They are still young and we are still developing them. They are 22 and 23 years old. This is not an age where you can say you belong to the old drivers.

“We will see what Red Bull decides, but if they will stay with us I think the complete team would be more than happy.”

Tost also said how he likes seeing Toro Rosso drivers graduate to Red Bull, showing that the feeder program does indeed work.

“This is one of the targets of Toro Rosso, to allocate the young Red Bull drivers,” he said.

“That’s what we like to do and therefore we are quite happy if they get a seat at Red Bull Racing because it means that the team has done a good job, that the drivers are ready to go and the drivers are ready to win races. And this is what we would like to see.”
