Tiger Woods Says He Is Not Dead, Believes He Can Win The Open Championship

Tiger Woods claims he is far from dead during a brave interview to the press Tuesday. But is the 39 year old in denial?

“I know some of you guys think I’m buried and done, but I’m still right here in front of you,” Woods said during a news conference at the Old Course. “I love playing. I play competing, and I love playing these events,” Woods said with as much sincerity as the former world number one could muster up.

Woods said Tuesday morning at the home of golf that he is far from being a ceremonial golfer.

In fact, he was in an oddly light-hearted mood. He joked about his age when a question about possible retirement came up. His last win of his 79 PGA Tour victories came in August 2013, when he was player of the year and won five times. His last remains the 2008 U.S. Open.

“Well, retirement? I don’t have any AARP card yet, so I’m a ways from that. I feel like my body is finally healed up from the surgery from last year. They say it takes you about four to six months to get back, but I’ve heard a lot of guys on tour who have the surgery and other athletes who say it takes over a year to get back,” Woods continued.

Woods remains the top draw every time he tees it up, especially amongst young golfers who desperately need the same inspiration that Woods provided a decade earlier. Whether Woods will rise to the top again remains to be seen, but he continues to make golf’s most important demographic – generation y – flock to the course to witness a glimpse of the Tiger Woods flame, albeit a fading one.

Woods is back at a place he adores, where he win in both 2000 and 2005. St. Andrew remains one of the few courses in the world where there is no premium on driving the ball in the fairway. Woods knows better than anyone that this might be his last shot at Open Championship glory.

“I’m very excited to be back here at the home of golf. I’ve always loved this golf course, from the first time I played it back in ’95, so it’s just something special about it. It’s nice to be out there on the course and see it and feel it again, to be able to hit all the shots,” Woods remarked.
