Rory McIlroy isn’t the only pro golfer who leads a bit of a double life. Just as the Irishman is somewhat of an amateur soccer player in his spare time, Jamie Donaldson is learning the ropes of being an RAF pilot in this video. The 2014 Ryder Cup champion has taken to the skies to raise awareness for the RAF Benevolent Fund and the East Cheshire hospice. It takes time away from golf practice, for sure, but at least it’s for a good cause.

It’s fascinating to hear Donaldson describe his flying experience over England’s stunning Lake District. As you might expect, it’s a thrilling, surreal thing to be soaring over green hills and pristine, jewel-like lakes at 400mph. But curiously, he also says it’s not unlike playing in the Ryder Cup. Both times, he had to undergo several briefings and fittings of appropriate suits. When the plane’s roof closed over his head, it was much like the calm that descended over him as he approached the tee, ready to show the world his stuff. Perhaps transitioning to a cramped cockpit after his stint as a golfer is not so far-fetched after all.
