When someone slags off the big 3, they must think an awful lot of themselves. In an interview, Anirban Lahiri got personal in an interview after he tied fifth in the PGA championship at Whistling Straits this year. Lahiri crowed about his optimism and his increased surety about himself after playing all four majors and making the cut on three of them. He declared that this somewhat decent run at the majors was apparently proof that he was ready to beat the greats at their own game. We quote:

“The self-belief has been stronger after my good show at the PGA Championship. I played all four Majors and made the cut on three occasions. I won the Malaysian Open and the Indian Open. I did well at the Augusta Masters and the Open. That’s what has made the difference in my game. This shows that top golfers like Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth are beatable.”

Er, no. A handful of moderate successes does not a world champion make. In any case, being number 38 in the world, Lahiri has a LOT of people to beat before he even touches the Golden Trio. Who knows how many lifetimes that will take?
