Jordan Spieth is quickly finding out that, when you’re at the top, everyone wants to take your crowd. Including, strangely, math.

Spieth can lose his No. 1 golf world ranking this week to Rory McIlroy with a 15th-or-worse finish at Plainfield Country Club.

during the second round of The 143rd Open Championship at Royal Liverpool on July 18, 2014 in Hoylake, England.

Which wouldn’t sound too strange, except for the fact that McIlroy isn’t playing this week.

So how does this add up?

According to Golf Channel research, Mcilroy can reclaim the top spot this week despite the fact the Northern Irishman isn’t playing The Barclays. Basically, if Spieth doesn’t finish 14th or better McIlroy will retake the top spot.
