Can Jordan Spieth bring a missing man out of hiding?

Anthony Kim had become a bit of a mythical creature in the golf world. Blessed with a rare, fierce talent, he came onto the scene in 2007 and wowed everyone on the PGA Tour. However, he spent years squandering it with a hard-partying lifestyle he might have maintained partly to spite his overbearing father, whose parenting style echoed that of Earl Woods and Joe Jackson. This would all have been a forgivable offense if he’d been winning matches, but he was incurring a slew of debilitating injuries that had him on indefinite leave. Cue his 2012 disappearance. He refused interviews, cut off ties with all his former golf links and became impossible to track down. Rumor had it that he was staying out of golf to keep a $10 million disability check. If he loses that, he would have to earn $35 million to regain it all. His motivation for vanishing then becomes more understandable, if less noble.

However, he has recently broken his long silence in an interview with Associated Press. And he revealed that the likes of Jordan Spieth just might get him back in fighting form.

“I’ve been watching more and more. I miss the competition a little bit. Watching these young guys like Jordan Spieth is bringing me back to watch.”

But is Jordan Spieth worth potentially losing $10 million over? He’s not so sure yet.

“Here’s what I’m telling you today. I’m going to step away from the game for a little while and get my body pieced together. Instead of going from an Achilles injury to try and go 180 mph and not fixing the problem… I’ve so much ground to make up from injuries – rotator cuff, labrum, spinal fusion, hand injury. I’ve had six or seven surgeries in the last three-and-a-half years.”

Though we don’t think he’s telling us everything, we suppose that’s fair enough for now.
