Padraig Harrington, who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, is undergoing some pretty drastic measures to ensure he recovers in time for his comeback at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in early January.

The Irishman is using a cryotherapy unit to encourage muscle regeneration. The chamber is roughly the size of a shower cubicle and will freeze the body to a temperature of -130C (-200F). Padraig will chill in the nitrogen-cooled death trap for 3 minutes before ensuring nobody sees him naked because he swears it’s usually more impressive…

The three-time major champion injured his knee in similar circumstances to Rory McIlroy. “I was playing tennis with my children and not doing anything foolish like jumping the net,” the fan favourite joked.

The chamber will set you back a cool £36,000 ($54,000) and it’s important not to underestimate its intensity, “It’s not like sticking your hand in an ice bucket or taking an ice bath — this is extreme cold,”  said Harrington’s fitness coach in an interview with CNN. Here’s what West Ham United players looked like after they’d been partially frozen to death.
