Manchester United defended Guillermo Varela has opened up about playing for Louis van Gaal, describing his complex personality in a candid new interview. The 22-year-old made his United debut back in December and has played three times since, including his team’s most recent FA Cup win over Derby.

The young Uruguayan is into his third year at the club, but was dropped for Tuesday’s fixture against Stoke. Amidst rumors that van Gaal is impossible to work with, Varela came clean this week by calling his boss “difficult”.

“The rumours say there is always some kind of problem with the South Americans. If I tell you the truth, I have had none. When we’ve had to talk it has been clear and stayed at that. However, he has a difficult personality. Sometimes it is not so easy for the players.”

Varela witnessed the spectacular incident at Old Trafford in January when Man Utd fans turned on van Gaal following their defeat. He conceded that the fans – like his fellow players – were suffering an anxiety that Man Utd seldom have experienced in their  illustrious history.

“The stands were falling down. They know that things are not going well and the fans get anxious, just like the players.”
