If you thought Mesut Ozil was Europe’s assist king, you can think again. After firing four straight blanks in the Premier League, the once-mighty Ozil has been overtaken.
Ozil made a scintillating start to the 2015/16 Premier League by notching up 16 assists by Christmas. Many believed he was a lock to destroy Thierry Henry’s record, but this opinion has changed in recent weeks.
Surprisingly, it is now Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund that has dethroned Ozil. Having amassed 17 assists across all European competitions this season, Mkhitaryan might just be the person to wake up Ozil from his slump.
Meanwhile, Neymar is now tied with Ozil on 16 assists after helping Barcelona humiliate Valencia on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey first leg.
Just how good has Mkhitaryan been?
The Armenian international has been epic in Dortmund’s cup, providing 10 assists while remaining consistent in the Bundesliga. Mkhitaryan has assisted six times in the Europa League and two more times in the DFB-Pokal, Germany’s equivalent of the FA Cup.
