Just when it looked like Louis van Gaal might receive some positive press for once with a Man Utd victory, Diego Costa scored in injury time to make the Dutchman’s life even more miserable. The Spanish striker denied van Gaal’s men a much needed victory as United now sit six points adrift of a Champions League spot.

For van Gaal, it was the realisation of a 2015/16 master plan gone horribly wrong as his team look certain to miss out on a Champions League spot, costing the club millions of dollars and likely frustrating van Gaal’s replacement Jose Mourinho.

“Deep frustration because we were the better team. Again. And we didn’t win. We had the better chances but we didn’t win. We played a superb game until the last quarter. Then we did not keep the ball in the way I think we have to. Then, we were unlucky and we get a goal against us. It is unbelievable. We don’t reward ourselves.”

Reward yourselves ladies and gents, that’s the message we will take from van Gaal’s interview.

Chelsea meanwhile will be turning their attention to the FA Cup and the Champions League, where they have been impressive compared to their lacklustre Premier League defence this season. Their task was made somewhat more difficult when Kurt Zouma was taken off and sent to the hospital after a horrific fall. Hiddink looked visible concerned, although he didn’t want to jump to conclusions:

Tomorrow we know more, but if you have this injury – and everyone has seen how bad it is – hyper-extension is always bad. I had this same problem once and it hurts. But let’s hope and see tomorrow what the MRIs will show,” Hiddink said in his post-match interview.
