Quique Sanchez Flores has backed Watford striker Troy Deeney to replace Manchester United’s injured Wayne Rooney in the England squad.

Rooney is unlikely to feature during the upcoming friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands, and Flores believes his Hornets striker has a real chance to replace the captain: “He has the characteristics to play at the high level of the national team,”

Here’s a few other suggestions as to who could replace Rooney, based upon Sanchez believing Deeney is of that calibre.

Lee Tomlin

Rumour has it that the Bournemouth forward is Wazza Roo’s stunt double.

Dwight Gayle

With a record of 16 goals in the last six-and-a-half Premier League seasons, Sanchez is no doubt baffled by the fact that the Crystal Palace forward isn’t England’s all-time record goalscorer now.

To put that into perspective, John Terry has 23 goals in the same amount of time.

Connor Wickham

Come 2025, Wickham will probably have had £98million spent on him in transfer fees but will still be sitting on the same number of Premier League goals. Oh, and he’ll still be referred to as a ‘hot prospect’.

Perfect for the England squad, don’t you think, Quique?
