Marcus Rashford has just reached superstar status for pulling through for Manchester United in their most recent Europa League match. He helped the devils bash Midtjylland back into the corner by scoring twice on his debut for beleaguered manager Louis Van Gaal. But the 18-year-old striker wasn’t always such hot property. According to his former youth coach, he was rejected by Manchester City for being “too small”.

He kickstarted his career at Fletcher Moss Rangers, a club south of Manchester that also produced the likes of Danny Welbeck. Club secretary Ron Jamieson said, “His brother Dwayne was with him when he came to us. He was touting him to Manchester City at the time but the recruitment officer there did not fancy him because he was a bit on the small side and didn’t pick him up.”

Luckily for him, there were a couple of clubs that were a little bit more forward thinking.

“We took him to the [Champion of Champions] tournament and all the scouts were there. Everton were very keen, and Manchester United.” And we all know how that ended, of course.

Funny to think that if circumstances had been a little different, Marcus Rashford would have been pitted against his current team right now.
