The press was all over Marcus Rashford after yet another stunning performance against Arsenal on Sunday. The 18-year old put himself in the spotlight all over again after a first-half brace after the 3-2 win against the Gunners. But teammate Michael Carrick is quick to emphasize that he wasn’t solely responsible for Man United’s stunning show. Apparently, 22-year Guillermo Varela is responsible for plenty of behind-the-scenes magic.
Varela was just making his second start at the Premier League, but he was solely in charge of preventing Alexis Sanchez from turning the game in the Gunners’ favour. Seeing as the press hadn’t caught wind of his superior defence on Sunday, Carrick laid on the praise pretty thick.
“Obviously Marcus is going to get the headlines but I thought Guilly was terrific at right-back and especially after getting a yellow card against somebody like Sanchez.
“He was my wingman and my support just outside of me! I thought Timmy did well when he came on – to come on in a game like that at left-back which is not really his position.”
Of course, he’s really just happy that they won at all at the end of the day, no matter who ended up taking centre stage.
“There are so many positives to take from it. I think there was a real togetherness in the squad and I think the fans responded to that. Seeing somebody like Marcus doing what he has done this week has given everybody a huge boost, so it is great to see everybody so happy.”
