Jason Gore is yet another relative unknown who’s steadily gaining attention for his fantastic approach shots. He made headlines by holing a rare albatross at Torrey Pines earlier this year and he’s done it yet again at the Valspar Championship. He may have finished with a one-over-72, but his 128-yard eagle is sure to go down in the annals of golf history as one of the shots of 2016. Looks like his knack for long-hitting is really paying off.

That fateful albatross

It sounds insane when a one-over-72 was better than Jordan Spieth’s score, but the World’s No. 1 ended up with a shocking 76 yesterday and making an 11-footer his only birdie of the day. Spieth has definitely been having a rough season of it, shooting a 73 or worse five times and ending up with a 79 at Riviera. His mental game seems to be feeling the strain from all the traveling he’s been doing and the weight of all those expectations upon him. Sometimes, you just perform better when nobody is paying attention and guys like Jason Gore are benefiting from being the underestimated underdogs of the PGA Tour. Perhaps that could be a good thing for Jordan Spieth. With all eyes off of him, he’ll be able to decompress, regroup and surprise us all with amazing playing once more.
