Nigel De Jong is at it again with the potentially career ending challenges; Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe was the Dutchman’s latest victim, leaving the stadium in a wheelchair after suffering an impact ankle injury at the hands of Nigel de Jong.

In the 73rd minute the former Manchester City and AC Milan defensive midfielder, who joined LA Galaxy in the off-season, recklessly dived into the challenge over the ball, crushing the United States international’s ankle with his studs.

Nagbe was obviously unable to walk following the challenge and had to be carried off the field.

In real time, the challenge didn’t appear to have a great deal of malice behind it – but the still images tell a different story…

Ouch!

De Jong has become infamous for his rough tackles after his flying kick on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 World Cup final and followed by a series of dangerous lunges on Premier League stars during his stay at the Etihad.

Speaking after the game, De Jong claimed he was sorry for hospitalising Nagbe but insisted he was well within his rights to make the challenge:

“In a game like this, it’s never the intention to hurt anybody, as well with my foul. I apologize to the kid, I mean, he’s a great kid.

But it was never my intention to foul him. Yeah, we’ll see,”
