Neymar Earns Less Than Bang-Average Premier League Flops

The details of Neymar’s Barcelona contract have been circulating around the web since they were revealed yesterday by Football Leaks.

Whilst the contract revealed a hefty some of bonuses attached to the success of the Catalonian giants, football fans were generally surprised to learn that the Brazil captain ‘only’ earned a modest £77,000 per week.

If you were amongst the faction of fans who were more than a little surprise then prepare for a more considerable shock when you compare Neymar’s weekly wage to that of these four 2015/2016 Premier League transfer flops:

Jonjo Shelvey – £80,000/week

The former Liverpool, Swansea and current Newcastle United flop, boasting a handful of England caps to his name, currently pockets £80,000 every week at St. James’ Park – a fantastic investment Mr. Ashley.

The sweetest past of the deal is that the Magpies, now surely doomed to start tumbling down the divisions, didn’t think to negotiate a pay cut for the midfielder should they be (when they are) relegated to the Championship.

From next season, a Championship midfielder could be potentially be earning £3,000 a week more than the La Liga and Champions League winning Brazil captain… let that sink in for a moment when you consider the state of the English game.

Fabian Delph – £90,000/week

Remember Fabian Delph? Probably not – I mean why would you. The only memory I have of Delph is of him getting injured with 3 minutes of an England international, has he kicked a ball since then? Who cares.

In summary, Fabian Delph has been anything but a good signing for Manchester City since joining in the summer for £8 million. With just four league appearances under his belt, all of which coming as a substitute, Delph was nothing more than a James Milner replacement, fulfilling City’s homegrown players quota.

Delph is apparently more valuable sitting on Manchester City’s than Neymar is, smashing in goals for fun alongside Messi and Suarez at Barcelona – how ridiculous.

Memphis Depay – £90,000/week

Memphis Depay was added to the Old Trafford  ranks for £19 million by Louis Van Gaal, desperate to add some spark out wide after Di Maria was embarrassingly shipped out to Paris. As United fans love to do, they quickly compared the Dutchman to some of the clubs past greats… the next Ronaldo they said, that surely hasn’t helped.

A couple of goals in the Champions League, coupled with a failed impact in the league, his subpar performances even saw him dropped for youth product Jesse Lingard… and yet this guy takes home more than Neymar each month – how tragic.

Nicolas Otamendi – £120,000/week

It’s a good job I named and shamed this culprit, I’ll admit I’d struggle to pick him out in a police line-up.

After a number of impressive performances in his previous La Liga campaign with Valencia, Nicolas Otamendi was subject to interest from both Manchester clubs, among many other top teams… although it’s hard to see why now.

Ultimately Manuel Pellegrini’s City side forced the Argentine’s signature onto a £120,000/week deal as he made a big money move, costing City an initial fee of £28.5 million.

Needless to say Otamendi has seldom started for Manchester City in either the Premier League or the Champions League – he’d be turned inside out by any half decent attacker, let alone matched up against the trickery of Neymar.

Do Barcelona Need To Offer Neymar A New Contract?

Yes! Can’t believe his wage is so relatively low, no wonder he’s rumoured to leave.

No way. The guy is earning 77k a week, let’s get real here.
