Karim Benzema will not play for France in the Euro 2016 tournament because of his involvement in a sex tape scandal with Mathieu Valbuena.

His omission from the rosters stems from his involvement in a conspiracy to blackmail and extort international teammate Matthieu Valbuena over a sex tape.

Benzema was suspended indefinitely in December of 2015 for his involvement in the scandal, where he tried persuade Valbuena to hand over large sums of money to his would-be blackmailers.

Fans of Les Bleus had hoped that the scandal would sort itself and Benzema would rejoin the squad in time for the Euro.

Back when he was suspended, his club, Real Madrid, came out in support of their player.

“REAL MADRID C.F. REGRET BUT RESPECT THE DECISION TAKEN TODAY BY THE FRENCH FOOTBALL FEDERATION TO PROVISIONALLY SUSPEND KARIM BENZEMA FROM THE FRANCE NATIONAL TEAM, AND WISH TO REITERATE ONCE MORE THEIR SUPPORT AND CONFIDENCE IN THE PLAYER.”

Some of the more damning evidence against Benzema included a wiretapped phone call with a childhood friend that was leaked to the media where the sex tape was discussed.

Benzema had previously been under a no-contact order with Valbuen, prohibiting the two of them from sitting down to work things out. When the judge lifted that order, it led to speculation that Benzema would be ultimately be able to rejoin the team in time for the Euro.

The decision to disallow Benzema from the tournament comes after a meeting Wednesday, April 13th between national team coach Didier Deschamps and president of the French Football Federation Noel Le Graet.

It might be the right thing to do, but all of France loses.

All they ever wanted was a big body Benz…

Character issues notwithstanding, he’s one of the most exciting players in Europe and France’s most dangerous striker.

For a team that has underperformed on the global stage at every opportunity, losing Benzema was the worst thing that could happen.
