Newcastle United are back in the Championship, eight years after they were relegated to the second-tier with the bizarre cliche ‘it will do the club good to go down, rebuild and then come back up’.

Yeah, that went well?.

Although the Magpies returned back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, it has been one continual mistake and ill judged decision after another, with the incompetence of Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley filtering down and poisoning the club right through to its core.

Lessons clearly are never learned at St James’ Park, with a final day win over West Ham last season narrowly securing the Geordie boys’ top flight status.

Mike Ashley’s end of season rallying cry appeared to show a man who had learnt from previous mistakes, genuinely cared about a football club and viewed it as so much more than just a ‘cash cow’.

Then the Magpies appointed recently-sacked-from-Derby County, Steve McClaren, and then continued on their foolish transfer recruitment policy of signing mid-level players from the average European leagues in the hope of unearthing another meal ticket in Yohan Cabaye.

For all of Steve McClaren’s flaws, there aren’t too many managers out there who could’ve mobilised this ill-suited squad for Premier League survival, let alone a meaningful campaign.

The calls for Ashley to leave have never stopped, and they will only intensify now – especially when former club heroes are stoking the fire.
