There have been some passionate displays of disharmony this season – particularly at the bottom end of England’s league divisions. Typically when English clubs are relegated, fans will shed tears, there may be a chorus of boos or others will choose to simply applaud their team’s efforts if they appreciate that their time to drop down the divisions has come.

Fans of Turkish Super Lig club Eskisehirspor however, completely trashed their own stadium and set the place on fire following the club’s match at Eskisehir Ataturk Stadium on Sunday – a fixture that saw them relegated to the Turkish second division.

Visiting side Medipol Basaksehir defeated the hosts 2-1, but had little time to celebrate their victory as angry fans invaded the pitch and ripped out the goals in a demonstration of disgust. It wasn’t long before pyromaniacs amongst the home support began setting the stadium alight.

Footage shows fans creating a burning pile of rubble in the middle of the pitch, bolstered by the club’s advertising boardings from around the ground. Many other sections of the stadium were quickly engulfed in flames.

Eskisehirspor had been planning to move stadiums for the start of next season and so won’t be playing at the Eskisehir Ataturk Stadium for their next campaign anyway – an opportunity seized on by their fans to display their disgust at sinking into Turkey’s second tier.

Plans to move to a newly-build 33,000-seater stadium this summer had already been finalised, with many fans critical of the manner in which the club’s finances were employed – suggesting more should have been spent on the squad to avoid relegation.

Three fans needed hospital treatment following the protests after suffering minor burn injuries and respiratory problems caused by the combination of fire and smoke inhalation.
