The Euro is the second best sporting event there is.

Only the almighty World Cup eclipses it in terms of prestige, grandeur, and significance.

The only people not giddy with anticipation are the guys who didn’t make the cut. Let’s take a look at three of the favorites to win it and see who got snubbed.

GERMANY

SNUBS:

Miroslav Klose: father time has finally caught up with the 37-year-old striker. Having played his last game with Lazio in Serie A, is MLS in his future?

Philipp Lahm: not really a snub since he retired from international football after the 2014 World Cup at the age of 30, but it seems weird to see a German team in a major competition without him marshaling the right side of that defense.

Things To Watch:

  • Will the Germans be as dominant as they were in Brazil in 2014?
  • How did Sebastian Rudy make the team?
  • Will the squad be able to deal with coach Loew’s curveballs – playing 4 centerbacks, playing Lahm at center mid during the last World Cup – if he gets wonky?

SPAIN

SNUBS:

Fernando Torres: the magic was sapped from his golden boots long ago. Perhaps he still has a little something up his sleeve for the Atlético – Madrid Champions League derby, though.

Diego Costa: everyone’s least favorite player misses the cut. Probably more due to a bum hamstring and lack of fitness than lack of ability, to be fair.

Juan Mata: hard for Juan Mata to carve out a spot for himself in the midfield amongst the likes of Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta (both Barcelona), David Silva (Manchester City), Koke, Saul Niguez (both Atletico Madrid), Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea), Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich), and Isco (Real Madrid)

Things To Watch:

  • Where will the goals come from?
  • Do any vestiges of Spain’s glory days (2008-2012) remain?
  • Will Pedro play well enough to justify leaving Juan Mata off the roster?

PORTUGAL

SNUBS:

Pizzi: the talented Benefica center mid is a fan favorite but Portugal is ridiculously stacked in the midfield/attacking department. Blame Rafa’s excellent play for Pizzi’s absence.

Bernardo Silva: the 20-year-old Benefica phenom picked a terrible time to get injured, otherwise he’d be in the mix for sure.

Things To Watch:

  • Are Portugal’s aging centerbacks up to the challenge of dealing with strikers who are 10+ years younger?
  • Will the Ronaldo and that world-beating midfield finally produce a championship run?
  • Who’s going to score up front?

Should Fernando Torres have made the Spanish team?

Yes
