In what is surely the most bizarre proposed arrangement in the history of the club, Manchester Utd have reportedly decided to give the baying fans their wish and remove Van Gaal from his post as Head Coach. After extensive speculation, Old Trafford will welcome Jose Mourinho to the dugout throne – and yet Van Gaal will remain at the club?

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward evidently regards the Dutchman very highly, as he will offer Louis van Gaal a role upstairs to accommodate Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Manchester United.

Mourinho became embroiled in the Old Trafford hot seat saga after a turbulent second season in charge for Van Gaal – the Dutchman’s failure to secure Champions League football has now prompted United’s hierarchy to make a bold managerial change this summer.

The ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager still has another year to run on his contract and it’s understood that a move upstairs would enable him to fulfil that deal. An interesting ploy from United to let Van Gaal fulfil his contractual obligations, avoiding the need for a termination settlement package, whilst also paving the way for Mourinho’s arrival.

Mourinho, who previously worked under Van Gaal at Barcelona and remains good friends with the Dutchman, has been out of work since his Chelsea exit before Christmas.

Mourinho has been deliberately coy about his United future out of respect to his former colleague, but is understood to already have a deal set in place. The Portuguese boss has admitted he will start his new job, wherever it may be, in the summer.

United are favourites to lift the FA Cup final trophy, yet the ice appeared to crack underneath Van Gaal’s feet when all hopes of securing a top four finish were shattered by their nearest rivals.

Despite failing to satisfy the Old Trafford faithful and deliver on his pre-season targets, Van Gaal appears to have United in a stranglehold. The move to shift him elsewhere within the United hierarchy is a move that smacks of desperation.

As firmly as the Reds would love to slam the door on the Van Gaal era, his size 11 loafers are firmly wedged in Ed Woodward’s door.
