After Kicking Dardoch, Supporting Team Liquid Feels Like Pissing In The Wind

Team Liquid have today announced that they will be parting ways with ‘Rookie of the Split’ jungler, Joshua “Dardoch” Hartnett and AD carry, Jovani “fabbbyyy” Guillen. The roster changes come just days before Liquid were set to begin their run through the gauntlet and attempt to reach a seemingly unattainable spot at Worlds. With an inexperienced line up, all hope of qualification has now all but vanished, begging the question – why bother supporting Team Liquid?

Team Liquid’s management have made some bizarre decisions over the years. The latest strategy – kicking your star jungler and AD carry, with your last shot at Worlds just one week away – is the most blatant admission of surrender ever witnessed by an NA LCS team.

Team Liquid fans still dream of what might have been in Season 4, where TL arguably boasted the best roster on paper and yet somehow managed to fall short once again. Season 6 has just been yet another case of failing to reach expectations: punishing former AD carry, Chae “Piglet” Gwang-jin by demoting him in favour of Dardoch, now it seems they can’t even be decisive and stand by their abysmal decisions.

Team Liquid are developing an unhealthy reputation as an organisation that fosters new talent, but always seems to openly donate them to other teams when they show teething problems.

Dardoch’s move to Echo Fox comes off the back of a split of disharmony with Team Liquid. TL admitted that they had looked to trade him out previously, following a reported confrontation with head coach Choi “Locodoco” Yoon-sub and former AD carry Chae “Piglet” Gwang-jin.

It would appear that TL are perhaps returning to previous blueprints and looking to build a team around Piglet once more, however there’s certainly reason to suggest that Liquid have been trying to do that all along. The TL timeline is a complete mess:

Piglet chose to release Xpecial, then approved Smoothie before then opting to pick Matt. Dardoch was benched due to their issues, before Piglet cracked and requested to play in challenger for the rest of the season… where to go from here? It’s impossible to know what Team Liquid will do next, largely because Team Liquid don’t know what they’re doing:

“We have decided to move forward with Arcsecond, a top tier Challenger player and one of our subs, over Dardoch in the jungle position,

“Josh is an incredible talent and we have tried really hard to make this lineup work and get the most out of this group of players. Ultimately, we feel we weren’t able to build an atmosphere that was optimal for performance and believe in making a change going forward.”

Team Liquid Official Statement

Liquid were always going to be outsiders for the gauntlet, Cloud9 and Immortals are both clearly better teams. The only logic is that the games provide Arcsecond an opportunity to step up and pick up some stage experience… at least then if he really underperforms, they may be incentivised to find another jungler before the spring split.

The only thing Team Liquid had going for them is that the could near guarantee finishing 4th each split – now they don’t even have that going for them.
