Manchester United are on the verge of locking down one of the top young defenders in the world in Eric Bailly.

The 22-year-old Ivorian had a terrific year with Villarreal and is widely regarded as one of the best up-and-coming defenders in La Liga. Check out his 2015/2016 highlight comp to see the kind of power move Manchester United are making by signing him:

Once he passes his medical exam, Manchester United will be free and clear to sign Bailly. His representatives expect the deal to be finalized by week’s end.

Bailly has the qualities that incoming manager Jose Mouinho is looking for; he’s fast, strong, aggressive, and skilled. A lot of teams could use a player like that. The only hurdle that remains is Bailly’s medical exam, which he is expected to pass.

This will be Jose Mourinho’s first big signing as Manchester United’s manager.

The spectacle that is Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still shrouded in mystery, and although rumors abound, it appears that Bailly’s deal will be finalized before Zlatan is signed, sealed, and delivered.

World powers including Bayern Munich, PSG, Barcelona, Arsenal, and Manchester City have been keeping a close eye on Bailly for the past year or two.

He’s the first puzzle piece in what will be a totally reinvented Manchester United squad. How will Bailly, Rooney, Mourinho, and the rest of the Red Devils fare next year?
