Christian Pulisic has to start for the United States.
Sure, the boys thumped Costa Rica 4-0 in the Copa America without Pulisic, but that’s hardly something to hang your hat on. The United States (population: 320 million) has 65 times more people than Costa Rica (population: 4.87 million) does.
Gyasi Zardes is big, strong, and fast, but those are his three most redeeming qualities. The fact that he’s starting over Pulisic is crazy.
Klinsmann played at the highest level. He knows the difference between a great soccer player and a great athlete.
I don’t want to denigrate Zardes’ game, but Pulisic has shown more flashes of brilliance in the 30 minutes I’ve seen him play for the USMNT than Zardes has throughout his career.
Gyasi is quality and deserves a spot on Klinsmann’s roster, but he can’t be starting over Pulisic.
Let the young boy cook, Jürgen.
