Eccentric Lazio Manager Resigns After Just Two Days

Marcelo Bielsa has resigned as manager of Italian side Lazio after just two days on the job. This isn’t the first time the eccentric Argentine has done this. Biesla, affectionately known as El Loco, walked out of his job as Marseille’s manager after their loss on the opening day of Ligue 1 last year. You know what they say – fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…

We note with amazement the resignation of Mr. Marcelo Bielsa … in a clear violation of the commitments undertaken in the agreements signed last week.

Official statement from Lazio

The chaos within the Argentine Football Association may have factored into Biesla’s decision to resign two days after being hired.

Prior to accepting the Lazio position, he was strongly linked to the head coaching job in Argentina after Gerardo Martino and his whole staff quit following Argentina’s loss to Chile in the Copa América final.

Bielsa previously coached Argentina from 1998 to 2004, leading the team to both a gold medal in the Olympics in Athens and to the finals of the Copa América in 2004.

The opportunity to return to his beloved Argentina was an attractive nuisance; he just couldn’t help himself. When push came to shove, Lazio was always going to lose the battle for Marcelo Biesla, a coach best known for popularizing the attack-oriented 3-3-3-1 formation.

Lazio has tapped former striker Simone Inzaghi as interim manager in the wake of Biesla’s unexpected departure.

Lazio is reportedly mulling legal action over Biesla’s behavior.

They do call him El Loco, but he didn’t just up and quit for no reason. Smart money says he’s got a better gig lined up, probably someplace where they wear blue and white striped jerseys…
