Never buy players off of the back of a good tournament, they say. However, for awhile, it looked like Arsenal’s purchasing of Andrey Arshavin, after killing it for Russia at Euro 2008, was going to be an exceptional piece of business.

Although Wenger moved for Arshavin, in classic Le Professeur style, Arshavin didn’t join in the summer of 2008, Wenger waited until after the January transfer window in 2009 to get his man, with Arshavin announced a couple of days into February – yeah, we can’t work that one out either.

Arshavin hit the ground running in north London, and it looked like the then-club record signing was going to be incredible value of money. And then, well, to be honest, no one bloody knows. But a mixture of being tried as a striker, weight issues and probably having to play with Nicklas Bendtner took their toll on the former Zenit Saint Petersburg player.

Despite four years at Arsenal, Arshavin wasn’t seen much after 2011, with his career representing a truly bizarre Football Manager-esque route post-the Emirates Stadium. A couple more stints back at Zenit, an underwhelming eight appearances for Kuban Krasnodar and now, the 35-year-old is running out for Kazakhstan outfit, Kairat.

Although, in fairness to Arshavin, he is showing glimpses, in the twilight years of his career, of the magic that prompted Arsene Wenger to sign him.

Outrageously naughty stuff from the former Gunner!
