WATCH: if this play-acting doesn’t make you laugh, you’re boring

Football is a game of fine margins, and there’s a lot to be said for gaining an advantage through any means necessary. However, should those ‘means’ result in you losing all your credibility, you’re better off not bothering.

Unlike a lot of football fans who like to take offence on a regular basis, I have no problem whatsoever with diving/play-acting to help your team gain momentum/an extra man/a goal etc – it’s no different to your player being knowingly in an offside position and not being flagged for it. However, I do have a problem when the play-acting isn’t done with an element of believability.

What a boy, David Luiz is?the master of the sincere play-acting. And it wound up a lot of Manchester United supporters, which was an added bonus.

One day, surely, the penny will drop with footballers that there’s no need to perform a routine that would win you gold in the diving at the Olympics. And instead, the less theatrical the better.

Until that day arrives – which it probably never will – we can continue to enjoy the amusingly cringeworthy attempts are feigning injury from ‘professional’ footballers…
