Bubba Watson has taken Ryder Cup matters into his own hands.
Watson has been getting a lot of attention for not being one of the three initial captain’s picks by Davis Love III. Even players from the European team have reached out to discuss the American’s tactics.
It seems though, that the only one not that worried, is Bubba himself. He said that if he isn’t chosen as the last captain’s pick, he wants to be an assistant captain instead.
“You know, we all want to be there,” Watson said following his first round at East Lake. “We all want to be a part of the team. Like I said in an interview yesterday, I want to be a part of the team. I sent (Love) a text that said, ‘Can I be assistant captain if you don’t pick me?’ So I put it out there. I want to be a part of the team no matter what.”
The team already has four vice-captain’s, so I doubt the U.S. needs any more, let alone Bubba Watson. No one wants to be bossed around by someone who thinks they know more than everyone else. If Love is worried about chemistry, he should definitely not let Bubba Watson become an assistant captain a few days before the tournament.
Watson is still in the running for Love’s final pick, which will be named at halftime of NBC’s Sunday night football game. But if he’s not picked he can go to the Ryder Cup like everyone else, by watching from afar and rooting for your country.
