Rory McIlroy gets a text from his caddie: “A tsunami just hit my bank account”

Rory McIlroy’s caddie was the one to tell his boss about payday.

“Rory McIlroy didn’t have to check his bank account to know that his FedExCup bonus had been deposited,” Doug Ferguson of the associated press writes.

J.P. Fitzgerald texted him the news.

“I think his words were, ‘a tsunami just hit my bank account, so thank you very much,’” Rory said at the WGC-HSBC Champions. Fitzgerald received a chunk of McIlroy’s $9 million prize for winning the highest paid title in golf.

“J.P. got a nice percentage of that, so I knew at that point it was already there,” added Rory, as he described the most satisfying message of his career.

“So the total was 1.05 million” McIlroy said. “I think he was quite happy.”

Last year Forbes revealed that golfers on tour will pay caddies roughly 8% of their tournament earnings and 10% if they win. In 2014, it was found that at least ten caddies earned at least $600,000.

The title alone would have put J.P. at No. 89 on the PGA Tour money list, one spot behind Vijay Singh.
