Clint Dempsey’s time with the Seattle Sounders is over

In the middle of the summer, the Seattle Sounders season looked all but over. The team was sitting 10 points outside of the playoffs with just 13 games left to play- the Sounders were shit and they knew. Then, a miracle occurred.

Nicolas Lodeiro was the catalyst, nay the Godsend, that turned the fortunes of the Seattle Sounders around and helped transform them into a Championship caliber team in just those mere 13 games. Unfortunately in this transformation, the Sounders did lose Clint Dempsey for the season due to some heart issues.

But the emergence of Lodeiro and the loss of Dempsey forced Jordan Morris to step up and become the leading man for Seattle. The boy that scored goals for the USMNT while playing for Stanford University has now become a man that has led the Seattle Sounders to the MLS Cup Final.

(This zero-to-hero sort of story of the Seattle Sounders wouldn’t have happened if the MLS had a promotion/relegation system, just saying.)

The Sounders have to be looking at the success they’ve had with their current squad, a squad without Clint Dempsey. The Sounders are no longer the perennial underachieving side with Clint Dempsey’s stat line being the only redeeming feature. Seattle is a motherfucking contender without him.

Although it was incredibly unfortunate circumstances for Dempsey, the Seattle Sounders should realize that it is no longer his team and would be more beneficial playing a bit role in favor of the Lodeiro and Morris party.

In his rookie season, Morris scored 12 goals and added four assists to his name, decent enough numbers for a first-year player in the MLS to earn him Rookie of the Year honors. Enough can’t be said about Nico Lodiero and the impact that he had in just 13 games this year. The pair has combined for six of the Sounders’ eight postseason goals – they told the whole damn team to get on their backs.

Dempsey’s time as a prime producer for the Sounders is done. Although Lodeiro greatly helped in getting the best out of Jordan Morris in Seattle, the ROY has found the confidence to truly lead the team.

Seattle is Jordan Morris’ team now.
