A Ligue 1 match was stopped on Saturday after a firecracker was tossed from the crowd, striking the Lyon goalkeeper in a gruesome injury.

After a very sad and tragic week in the world of football following the Chapecoense place crash, there are still horrible fans out there. Lyon were playing Metz in a Ligue 1 match when a visually disturbing injury took place.

Metz were leading 1-0 in the first half when Lyon goalkeeper, Anthony Lopes, was hit by a live firecracker..

Lopes was already on the ground when the firecracker was tossed. One player quickly steps away as it explodes in the keeper’s face. Immediately several players motion at the crowd to plead them to stop. The right move, but someone stupid enough to do this doesn’t care what players think – even from their own team.

Eventually the entire match was abandoned after officials concluded there was a lack of safety conditions. The French Federation has yet to rule, but the most likely outcome will by a 3-0 victory for Lyon.

Clubs officials from Lyon released the following statement after the match:

“The public authorities in Metz took the decision to stop the match between FC Metz and Olympique Lyonnais indefinitely, in agreement with the match delegate and the referee, following the incidents that took place at the half-hour point of the game,

“A report will be sent to the LFP’s Disciplinary Commission. The LFP regrets these incidents and will be uncompromising in its continued review of this report.”

Hopefully officials can quickly identify the individual and ban them for life from football grounds; then the authorities can get involved to charge this idiot.

ESPN reported on Sunday that Lopes’ seems to have avoid major long term injury.

“Dr. [Christian] Giroud confirmed that there was some traumatic hearing loss in both ears, a diagnosis first made yesterday evening by the emergency room staff at the Mercy de Metz hospital where the player was taken,”

Lyon club statement read.

Lopes will miss the Champions League game on Wednesday against Sevilla, but could return as earlier as weekend.
