Austrian powerhouse Niki Lauda delivered a knockout blow on Sunday night to his most prized employee, Lewis Hamilton, after reviewing footage from the first lap crash involving Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg.

Lauda was quick to point the finger of blame at Hamilton after seeing replays from the world feed of the Spanish Grand Prix.

“It is stupid, we could’ve won this race. Lewis is too aggressive. I need to talk to them and hear their explanation and then we will see what happens.” ~ Niki Lauda

This view was not shared by Toto Wolf, the team’s head of motorsport, who said there was no way of knowing who was really at fault. In an interview following the incident, Wolf said the double retirement was a “lesson learned” and assured fans that Mercedes will continue to let Hamilton and Rosberg race.

“Today was just a couple of unfortunate coincidences that ended up in us losing as a team. It’s painful for them to see that we have lost what could’ve been a great result. What I said to the two of them is that fundamentally they are sitting in the cars. They are responsible for bringing those cars home and they failed to bring those cars home today.” ~ Toto Wolf

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Sunday’s crash was the first incident between Hamilton and Rosberg since the Belgian Grand Prix two years ago. According to Wolf, “We have moved on from Spa in 2014 and it was a completely different situation in the team back then.” Let’s wait and see if those words hold true.
