Manchester United used to regularly have memorable Champions League nights – honestly, we aren’t joking; they even won it a couple of times – but those fairy tales are so irregular post-Sir Alex Ferguson, Red Devils are starting to question whether they dreamt them all up.

A quick scan of YouTube, of course, confirms nights against Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Barcelona, in the final of football’s most prestigious club tournament, happened. And that includes a few blockbuster moments along the way, most notably the mauling of AS Roma and the slaying of the Emperor of Rome, himself; Francesco Totti.

The crazy eight-goal thriller that occurred at Old Trafford, will stand the test of time – unlike Only Fools and Horses – as one of the greatest performances the Champions League ever saw.

You’ve got Cristiano Ronaldo at the peak of his United powers – crazy to think his time in Manchester was deemed to be the Portuguese international’s top level – Wayne Rooney pre-discovering Greggs, Rio Ferdinand being backed up by Edwin van der Saar and, most impressive of all, there’s Michael Carrick bagging himself an unlikely brace.

The footballing world couldn’t do anything but stand up and applaud that night, Sir Alex Ferguson had taken charge of a perfect performance. And none were more thankful to the Scot than Roma’s arch rivals, Lazio.
