Manchester United have enjoyed great success in the transfer market since the beginning of the Premier League era, identifying future superstars and polishing them into the world-beaters we have come to love – and loathe. 

But United have also seemed to enjoy great success in terms of selling players, with Sir Alex Ferguson often knowing exactly when to get rid of an ageing or peaked player. But he, like his predecessors, did let a few go a little earlier than perhaps they should have.

Depay has been hotly tipped as the next big-name player to head out of the Old Trafford exit door, with Jose Mourinho aware of the fact that he has not given the Dutchman many chances.

Nice, Lyon and AC Milan are all said to be sniffing around the winger, waiting for a chance to pounce. So could he be Mourinho’s first United transfer regret, or has Morgan Schneiderlin already taken that title?
