The last time Tottenham finished above Arsenal the world was very different

When Tottenham Hotspur fans ironically chanted: “Arsene Wenger we want you to stay” from 2006 to the end of last season, it always felt like a bizarre thing to say. Sure, Arsenal have declined and stagnated, but even during the aforementioned decade, Arsenal were more successful than their north London rivals and finished above them every single time.

But after last season’s humiliating capitulation against already-relegated Newcastle United, the same chant that echoes from White Hart Lane’s stands this campaign has more justification; the Gunners are entering free fall territory.

As the famous song goes, it was the summer of ’95 and Gerry Francis was sporting a hairstyle that not only wasn’t in fashion in the 90s, but is still waiting to ever have been in fashion – maybe 2030 will be the year for your barnet, Gerry.

Spurs finished the 1994/95 season in seventh place, eleven points ahead of 12th placed Arsenal, as Francis managed to build a team that wasn’t totally incompetent behind the obvious class of Jurgen Klinsmann and Teddy Sheringham up top.

To make things even sweeter for the Spurs faithful, a run of seven defeats in 12 games following George Graham’s sacking over the bungs scandal, meant that the Gunners came close to being relegated.

And just as the Lilywhites faithful felt like they couldn’t enjoy themselves at Arsenal’s expense anymore, former Spurs player Nayim scored *that* goal in the European Cup Winners’ Cup to break Gooners’ hearts in the final minute of extra time.

Since then, Arsene Wenger has come in and revolutionised Arsenal, whilst Tottenham struggled to follow suit. However, it does appear that now, some 20 years too late, they’ve finally got their act together.

In Mauricio Pochettino and his inability to win a trophy, they do so trust.

It’s safe to say the current crop of Spurs players are worth a tad more than the 1995 lot. But who is the most expensive player?
