The last time the hype was this big, was around impact Cherno Samba had on Football Manager; that’s how much AS Monaco striker, Kylian Mbappe, has made the footballing world stand-up and take note of him.

90% of gossip column inches will be taken up by the Frenchman this summer, with all of Europe’s big boys and Arsenal, set to be linked with world-record bids for the 1000th footballer to be called ‘the next Thierry Henry’ – funny how you have to be black to be called that, isn’t it?! Because surely to be compared to the Gunners legend, you merely have to play like him, rather than share a similar skin tone?!

Mbappe is seemingly breaking records at Monaco on a weekly basis, records set by the aforementioned Arsenal icon, but those records would’ve stood, if London rivals Chelsea knew a star in the making when they stood in front of them.

Four years ago, a 14-year-old Mbappe visited Stamford Bridge for a trial; amateur French side Bondy were has club at the time, and that was purely because his dad, Wilfried, was part of the coaching staff.

£17,000 in compensation was the asking price for Mbappe, then; a mere drop in the ocean compared to the £100million asking price Monaco’s powers-that-be have placed upon the Clairefontaine academy graduate.

Chelsea’s decision to reject Mbappe was based around their faith in youth team players, Dominic Solanke and Tammy Abraham.

The latter is soon-to-be rewarded with a new contract for his goalscoring form at, until recently relegation-threatened Championship outfit, Bristol City. Whilst Solanke is set to leave the club in the summer, after seeing his demands of £50,000-a-week not met by the Blues.

If Chelsea end up with the French striker this summer, it won’t be a surprise, and the Blues will be the envy of all other elite clubs. However, the bigger issue still remains, even without Jose Mourinho at the helm, what an earth is happening with the Blues youth team players?
