The King of Rome, Francesco Totti, is calling an end to a career after 25 years with Roma. The 40-year-old World Cup winner has had a glittering career in which has cemented an immortal legacy for the club which he grew up supporting.
Totti has played amongst Roma’s best sides in their recent history, including their Serie A title winning team from 2001, but also the eight times where Roma have cruelly finished as runners up in the league since 1992 when the King of Rome began his journey.
When looking back over this 25-year period, which players deserve a place in Francesco Totti’s best ever XI? We’ve set the team up in a more narrow diamond formation.

While some may argue that Totti would have benefited from potentially leaving Roma and joining one of Europe’s giants, like many other of Roma’s players, the capital provides a comfortable career to players who have learnt to play the game in the Italian way. But not just that, Roma has always been a competitive Italian side, for Totti to have finished as a Serie A runner up on eight occasions is ridiculous.
Regardless of the King of Rome’s loyalty which has limited him to one club, Francesco Totti has still managed to play alongside the games greatest players; World Cup winners, players who will be forever remembered by supporters of all clubs.
Most important of all, Totti has grasped the opportunity to create a legacy and to be part of history: something which many players fail to consider when deciding to end their loyalties with a club where they made their professional debut.
