Haas: Ferrari Has Made Amazing Progress

F1 Team Haas Team Principal Gunther Steiner has been watching the competition closely during the Barcelona test – and Ferrari has caught his eye.

After posting blazing speeds that managed to topple Mercedes’ runs during the Barcelona test, it’s fair to say that Ferrari has been attracting some attention heading into the 2017 season. The team has always offered a challenge to rival in the top three, but with the way that their new engine has progressed, could this be the first year in many that we see Mercedes fall from first?

While such speculation is positively delicious, we’ll have to gird our loins and ride out the rest of the season for that answer. In the meantime, however, we can solace in the words of Haas Principle Gunther Steiner and his thoughts regarding the new engine that Ferrari has brought to the table for 2017:

“They have done a fantastic job in my opinion.

To come out here with a new engine, a complete new engine, and be this reliable, it is amazing. If you look at the other ones around, and they are no dummies, they have quite a few issues.

So from last year to this year [Ferrari] stepped up a lot and it is very good.”

Given that the 2017 regulations have opened up the possibility for teams to make changes to their engines throughout the duration of the season, it is only logical that Ferrari would opt for a package that would afford them the reliability to push and pull the engine in different directions depending on the progression of the season.

Still, it is impressive to see just how much headway Ferrari has made catching up to Mercedes. And if anyone is thinking that this sort of performance is to be expected at the start of a season with overhauled regualtions, take a look at McLaren-Honda
