Breaking the world-record ten times over

There’s been plenty of debate of Paul Pogba’s £89million fee, was he worth it? Is anyone worth it? Regardless, the French midfielders season hasn’t been too bad. Still, with further investment each year into football, it won’t be long before that figure is beaten – but which players are most likely to be sold for more in the future?

Of course, the majority of these players are going to be fairly young – while Messi and Ronaldo spring to mind, their ages of 29 and 32, respectively,  mean that it is unlikely their fees would reach as high as Pogba’s sum.

Some are arguably more obvious than others, but of course, many fees will depend on other factors during a player’s career – perhaps a positional change, or the time at which a player is signed; Neymar’s value has likely doubled since his reported £48.6million move in 2013.

What is interesting to consider is the potential price of Kylian Mbappe at his current age of eighteen, the Frenchman’s performances in the Champions League were ridiculous, even Gianluigi Buffon had massive praise for the Monaco forward.

“It’s very exciting to know you’re playing against the future Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Maybe in 10 years, when I’m done, these will be the established champions and I will always have the memory of facing them at the dawn of their careers.”

Gianluigi Buffon

It’s rare a player of such stature will make such strong comments on a young player, and, given the performances of Mbappe in the Champions League this season, it’s hard not to agree with the Italian legend.
