Arsenal are braced for major additions this summer as they look to claw their way back into the Premier League’s top-four but the most significant addition may come away from the players.

Australian AFL side Port Adelaide confirmed in a statement┬áthat head of high performance coach Darren Burgess will move to the Premier League in July, after being handpicked by Arsene Wenger to join the Frenchman’s staff in North London.

The agreement sees Burgess return to the Premier League, where he previously worked with Liverpool, and is the start of a new relationship between Arsenal and Port Adelaide that will see the duo work together to grow sports science and professional development opportunities.

Known as ‘Dr Hamstring’, Burgess is regarded as one of the best physicians in the world and Arsenal clearly hope he’ll bring an end to their injury woes – with the likes of Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere all suffering from consistent injury problems in recent years.

Burgess’ professional approach will be well respected by the club and fans alike, with a famous statement from Burgess once reading:

‘Fitness will never win you a title but it will almost certainly lose you one.’

It also marks the first step towards the wholesale changes that Arsenal fans were promised heading into the summer, which had seemed to be false promises following the extension of Arsene Wenger’s contract and the news that they won’t be appointing a Director of Football this summer.

Whilst Burgess’ title at Arsenal won’t be as important as the other two possible changes, his arrival could change things dramatically in North London and change the fortune of the Gunners on the injury front- who have suffered the worst out of any big side in recent years.
