Ray Wilkins latest Brexit-based rant might have some merit

Ray Wilkins – who no doubt nearly burst a blood vessel over Jeremy Corbyn not bowing for the Queen – has come back with another ‘foreigners, mate; look at ’em’ rant. However, the Sky Sports pundit may well actually have a point this time.

“I was really disappointed to read they are looking at Bakayoko from Monaco. He is 22, French and doesn’t get near the national side, but it was quoted Chelsea might be paying £32m.

“Well, in Nathaniel they have a footballer who can play exactly the same but just needs an opportunity.

“You’ve seen already in the two games he’s played he looks a class act in and among people of his own age. Playing with the top quality players they have at Chelsea, he can only improve week to week.”

Although the motive behind Wilkins’ rant is, of course, one concocted with the old boys gang behind the scenes, whilst Paul Merson tucks into a bag of pork scratchings, his comments do have some merit.

Monaco are flavour of the month, as Thomas Lemar, Benjamin Mendy and Kylian Mbappe continue to be linked with moves away, following Bernando Silva’s exit to Manchester City; Tiemoue Bakayoko is merely the latest name caught up in the hype – barely even flirts with the French national team, having just one-cap to his name.

Nathaniel Chalobah is just another victim of English footballers who don’t get that chance to play enough; Bakayoko appears like an upgrade purely because he plays regularly.

Chalobah has been ready and waiting in the wings for what feels like an eternity, and has proven himself to be a class above his England teammates at his age group out in Poland.
