No surprises as Barcelona state Neymar is going nowhere

There’s a reason the transfer window is referred to as silly season, as statements have to be made by clubs who obviously insist their superstars won’t be sold.

Every year a superstar is apparently ‘on the move’ and this year is the turn of Barcelona’s Neymar, who’s attracting big attention from Paris Saint-Germain, and there’s a consensus amongst some that the Brazilian could leave after winning everything available in Catalonia.

Barcelona’s well-documented financial frailties have regularly led to suggestions that one or more of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez could be sold but the Catalans aren’t willing to explore the possibility, handing out new deals to their star-men.

Despite a ridiculous £195m release-clause in his contract, Neymar has still been linked with PSG and the speculation has forced Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez to confirm the Brazilian ace is going nowhere.

‘I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’s not our intention to lose players, certainly not good players. We try to improve within the confines of what is possible. We’ve not had any offers for any players in our squad.’

If Neymar was to leave Barcelona though, a move would be more likely to go ahead next summer as the winger’s release-clause allegedly rises to £219m next year – a sum that’s big enough to actually buy some football clubs.

If Paris Saint-Germain really do have around £200m that they’re willing to invest in players, I’d recommend they eye a number of deals rather than blowing their entire kitty on one South American – no matter how good he is.

The reality is that Neymar will probably be at Barcelona for life now unless his ridiculous transfer clause is met. If that figure is met, then I suggest we just give up on football anyway and switch allegiances to a sport which isn’t dominated by money- like lawn bowls.
